Serial Micro Fiction: Zamy and Landric – Part 1
“Landric, slow down,” huffed Zamy as she hurried after her friend. He didn’t slow, not exactly.
“Where is it?” he mumbled to himself, his steps taking him along the perimeter of the clearing as his eyes darted to and fro, searching for something.
“What are you looking for?” she called out. She had almost caught up to him. “Wait for me and I can help you find it.”
Either he didn’t hear her or he was ignoring her. Both options were equally possible, thought Zamy. When he was focused on something his attention often couldn’t be pulled away, but there were times he didn’t want to be disturbed and paid no heed to anyone.
She approached him as he walked around the area, bent over and staring at the ground. Zamy copied his posture and whispered, “What are we looking for?”
A moment later Landric pointed at a dark hole in the ground, half covered beneath a thriving, green cacantra bush.
“There, Zamy!” he exclaimed, a wide grin plastered across his face. “That’s what we’re looking for!”
The girl smiled and ran to the bush. She began plucking leaves and shoving them into a small sack that was tied to her wrist.
“These will be perfect for mama’s dinner tonight! Our supply has been out for several weeks!”
Landric shook his head. “Not the bush, silly. Look under it!”
Zamy looked. “That hole?”
“Yes, Zamy. Do you know where this hole leads?”
His eyes sparkled just as much as hers became guarded. “No,” she said slowly.
“Neither do I,” he answered as he moved toward it. “But I’m going to find out!”
