What is Clean Fantasy?
Clean fantasy is a category within the fantasy genre that is safe for all ages to read. It omits any sexual activity, even implications of sex, because in my opinion it’s not appropriate for children to be exposed to. It omits vulgarity and swearing, because that’s really not necessary for expressing emotion, and again, children shouldn’t have the need to be exposed to it. It also omits graphic violence and explicit gore. If it can give children nightmares due to how graphic it is, then it’s not safe for them to read.
Much of it takes the approach of: sure, it happens in this world, but it doesn’t need to be mentioned because for many people that would detract from being able to enjoy the story. I think of it like this, if a person can only enjoy a fantasy story that includes sex, and can’t enjoy one that has none in it, then clean fantasy probably isn’t for them. If they can only enjoy a story that includes vulgarity or graphic depictions of violence, clean fantasy isn’t for them. But I’d like to believe that is a small group of people. Even those who don’t mind sex, swearing, or violence (or even those who like some of it) can still enjoy a story in which these elements are not present.
I feel this is an important sub genre of fantasy because it meets the needs of all ages. I’ve heard many parents who know their child likes fantasy but they want to make sure it’s not going to expose them to things that are inappropriate for their age. I’ve heard many religious people who love fantasy but are disheartened that things have become more sensationalized and over the top, especially in regards to the above-mentioned topics. And while my stories are neither religious nor children’s fantasy, I write them as a place for people to go for safe, exciting adventures!
